The roof or cover is the main part of a home, it is what protects us from the elements, the weather, the sun or cold, the wind and danger. More than walls, a roof over our heads is an indispensable protection for humans. We feel vulnerable before the open sky.
There are different types of materials for the different roofs: whether they are sheet metal roofs, wooden roofs or covers of any other type, it is necessary to take into account our environment and what challenges could arise when keeping our tiles or roofs in optimal conditions.
For this reason, special care must be taken when building our home, whether we do it ourselves or hire metal roofing contractors and Engineering firms, and even if it is a house that has already been built, the roof or cover is a point that must be checked before making any move, check the conditions of waterproofing, insulation and interior finishes, and make the necessary adjustments before any stuff.
In this article, we present you with some cheap building materials for ceilings, both indoors and outdoors… and some ideas to make them look beautiful. Don’t miss it!
An important element of the family home is the roof, and the upper deck; Since it is this part that protects it, it provides security to its tenants from inclement weather, sun and night. The deck is the part that literally provides a roof for the home.
The shapes, designs and materials of roofs are many, and for that reason, we decided to explain in detail some types of roofs and materials for modern roofs.
You can build a beautiful gabled roof without the need for huge hulks of steel or expensive wood framing. The resistance of this structure consists of the sum of the trusses under the plates. This structure is perfect for a tile roof or complete tiled houses.
This option consists of assembling aluminum metal profile trusses, it is an extremely light material that can perfectly load sheets of special gypsum cardboard for exteriors, which are insulated and waterproofed and are perfect as a structure for roof sheets or any shingle roof.
An effective option for terraces or for service patios and roof terraces is to install a metal profile structure, it is very light and easy to place, by means of angles that are anchored to the walls or side fences. On them, which should be no more than 60 centimeters apart, the acrylic plates are placed or, if you want, you can also place ceiling sheets.
Wooden structures clad with wooden battens or plates are classic for their ease of installation and cost, since cheap and resistant wood such as seasoned pine is used.
The idea of an inexpensive wooden cover is to leave the structure exposed so that it does not look so rustic, if it is not to your taste, you can paint it in a neutral color, either white or cream, to blend in with the pieces and beams with the full clear. Do not forget the exterior waterproofing, it is essential.
If it is a small bedroom, a ceiling like the one in the photo always adds a little more space visually to the room.
Mud brick is a very noble, welcoming, warm, beautiful and structurally reliable material under certain circumstances. One of them is the work of roof vaults. The shape of the brick found on joists gives it support and strength, in addition to generating an original design and adequate management of light and climate. It goes without saying that brick is one of the most economical materials on the market for modern structures and roofs.
Like the construction of the previous point, in this case the vault has received a coat of paint to enhance the style and color of the place. It is a good decorative resource to draw attention to the brick walls or the tile roof, the wooden floor, or the art on the walls, or simply to reflect the natural light that enters through the windows.
Leaving the structure apparent, this roof is excellent for terraces or extensive galleries of the house. It is a very simple structure with wooden beams and thin bars every 60 centimeters, with a slope of 2 or 4 waters. Clay tiles sit directly on the structure, or they can be made of shingles with small wooden plates set on top of the other. It gives a fresh and cozy atmosphere to the place with all types of tile roofs.
Modern roofs on patios and terraces can be very economical and have simple structures since they are not supposed to carry machines or weights of any kind.
A good option is to build a structure with steel beams, a grid with columns and sides, and angles in the middle. On this structure, some planks or thin bars can be placed crosswise and on them secure reeds or small sticks of dry cane or bamboo to protect from the sun without limiting light or ventilation.
A variant of the previous structure is to place fabrics instead of acrylic, and in such a way that they can be retracted and allow the sun to enter or closed and prevent sunlight. One of its benefits is that the fabrics can be easily replaced or removed, washed, reattached and tensioned to function properly. Modern ceilings love fabrics!
Although concrete is not the most economical material for many types of roofs, it can be considered as such as long as it is used in a monolithic structure with the indicated steel and without major finishes.
The idea is that the slab towards the interior is shown bare, leaving the electrical installations apparent by means of rails and supported cables. The outside must be properly insulated and waterproofed. By not having soffits, ducts and interior finishes you can save a good sum of money, and use it to install modern industrial-style luminaires, doesn’t that sound better? If you want something similar but cheaper, you can do a combination of concrete and roofing sheets.
This slab consists of a steel and concrete reinforcement forming a series of transversal and longitudinal beams, and between them, the insulating material, preferably polystyrene, is placed. Below and laterally, wooden falsework must be placed, for the enclosures and to load the slab. If you like houses with tiles, a slab of this style could serve as a base.
This cover can work on its own as a roof sheet structure or as a ceiling light, due to the versatility of its material, design and format. It is perfect for giving a home an industrial or contemporary touch, where a series of steel beams hold corrugated sheet plates in the design of your choice.
It is necessary to cover the structure with special paint for roof sheets, anticorrosive and non-toxic since it will be inside the residence. On the outside, you must ensure precise waterproofing for the region. Run to tell your trusted architect about your projects and the vision you have for your home!
