How Exercising Can Gain You An Extra 10 Years Of Life

It has been known for a long time that physical exercise is a very healthy practice. However, a long-term study led by sports scientists at the Karlsruhe Institute of Technology (KIT for its acronym in German) reveals that people with a more active life appear to be 10 years younger than people their age in terms of motor skills are concerned.

A Study With 500 Participants On The Benefits Of Sport

The project began in 1992 and throughout this time researchers have been observing the progress of 500 volunteer participants between 35 and 80 years of age. Throughout the process, medical tests were periodically carried out on all the people who were the object of the study in which they were taken and compared with their height, weight, body composition, lung function, and heart rhythm and function. Also, participants had to perform exercise tests ( abs , pushups , etc.) where motor skills were measured.

10 Years Younger And Fewer Health Problems

The tests reveal that the most active older people appear to be 10 years younger than sedentary participants in terms of motor skills. In other words, a 50-year-old who exercises regularly is as fit as an inactive 40-year-old. Similarly, those who play sports seem to have fewer physical problems as they age, and those who do less than two and a half hours of moderate exercise a week (as recommended by the World Health Organization ) are four times more likely to develop diabetes than type 2).

Not Stop Exercising With Age

In 2018, the Journal of the American Heart Association published the results of a study on physical activity and sedentary lifestyle in people between the ages of 60 and 64, which shows that increased exercise of low , medium or high intensity reduces the risk of cardiovascular disease.

According to the study’s conclusions, increasing physical activity at any intensity and reducing a sedentary lifestyle has significant benefits in cardiovascular and cardiorespiratory health in middle-aged people. Typically, this is the time of retirement, when work life is left behind and an opportunity presents itself to continue an active lifestyle or develop new healthy habits in the day-to-day routine.

Regeneration Of Muscle Cells

A recent study in mice has shown that voluntary exercise on the running wheel accelerates muscle repair in elderly mice. In the same way, as we age, the regeneration of muscle cells becomes less effective, especially if we follow a sedentary lifestyle. On the contrary, if we stay active, we can increase the efficiency of cell regeneration in the muscles, promoting a better recovery after training.


The benefits of playing sports are many and can improve our lives now and in the future. We already know that physical fitness and motor skills decline with age, however exercise helps to slow down this process. Thanks to physical exercise, you can enjoy a better quality of life in old age. Active people look and feel 10 years younger than sedentary people in terms of motor skills. So if you want to live a long and healthy life, don’t stop, keep exercising and make sure to include cardio and strength exercises regularly in your routine.
